Galway Bay fm newsroom - Plans for the development of recreation and amenity facilities at South Park and Kingston in the city are to go on public display shortly.
It follows a presentation at last evening's meeting of the City Council, which outlined ambitious projects for both locations including all weather playing fields, gym equipment and playgrounds.
At this week's meeting of the local authority, councillors were presented with draft plans for the future use of lands at South Park at the Claddagh, and Kingston in Knocknacarra.
At South Park, the vision includes an all weather multi-purpose sports training and playing facility, children's playground, looped walk and cycle way, events area and outdoor gym equipment.
Councillors raised some concerns over the proposed development - including ground contamination and potential flooding - but were overall impressed with the vision laid down by engineers at last evening's meeting.
Meanwhile, a similar development proposed at Kingston would provide a grass surface rugby pitch, multi-use games facilities, children's playground, outdoor gym equipment and education facilities.
As part of the Kingston development, a sand based artificial surface hockey pitch would also be provided at Millars Lane - and the existing grass surface soccer pitch would also be upgraded.
Councillors expressed some concern over the Kingston development - in particular, many took issues with proposed access routes to the proposed amenity through existing private estates.
Engineers stressed that following a period of public display and the production of a master plan, funding would be another issue - and both developments might have to be completed on an indeterminate phased basis.
Councillor Pearce Flannery welcomed the plans, and told the chamber that the one thing he would never oppose was sports facilities - and said the city could never have enough of them.
Both plans will go on public display shortly as part of a public consultation process.
