The construction would see the creation of a new wing facing onto the River Corrib with works taking place to the existing four storeys of the hotel.

Three appeals have now been lodged over the planning permission.

Environmental agency, An Taisce has appealed the decision on the grounds that the development would compromise the integrity of nearby archaeological site.

Another appeal was lodges by the owners of the adjacent multi-storey car park over fears that the expansion of the hotel will affect the future development of the car park.

While a third appeal was submitted by the owners of Costa Coffee over fears that construction would affect the structural condition of their property.

An Bord Pleanala will make a decision in May.
