Another amendment will see the retention of the signalised junction exiting Hughes supermarket from Montiagh.

The pedestrian crossing between Hughes supermarket and the church will be retained under the plan, but will undergo some minor changes.

Director of Services Jim Cullen told the meeting the upgrade will involve works on 960 metres on the N83 and 260 metres on the R381.

This will see a range of elements including footpaths, pedestrian crossings and cycling facilities.

The meeting heard a key part of the principal upgrade will be focused on surface water drainage and the road drainage system, with flooding problems continuing in the centre of Claregalway village.

Oranmore/Athenry Independent councillor James Charity proposed the amended scheme.

He said it needs to draw a careful balance between the lives of the residents and the many commuters who travel through the area - for more on this story tune in to Galway Bay fm news on the hour...
