Galway Bay fm newsroom - Galway County Council is to trial a pilot programme on the N59 in the Kylemore area of Connemara in a bid to remind tourists that they must drive on the left hand side of the road.
It comes following a number of accidents on the section of road in recent years which have resulted in some serious injuries.
Kylemore is one of the great scenic locations but the resultant traffic on local roads in summer is posing a safety risk.
One hazard which is being identified locally relates to drivers who are not familiar with driving on the left.
Local Councillor Tom Healey said there is plenty of anecdotal evidence of accidents and near misses as a result of this.
Two bad accidents in the Kylemore area last summer resulted in serious injuries; people had to be airlifted to hospital in one instance.
Councillor Healy said these accidents have focused many people's minds.
The Clifden District Garda Superintended wrote to Galway County Council expressing his concern.
The R.M.S. company from Oranmore is linking-up with Galway County Council in a pilot road marking scheme with arrows reminding drivers to keep to the left.
It is planned to have this scheme in place for the tourism season.
