Galway Bay fm newsroom - Plans are afoot for major change in Tuam's school community with an application to amalgamate Presentation College and Scoil Bhríde, Mercy Secondary School.
It follows an extensive consultation process on the future of Catholic second level education in the East Galway town.
Boards of Management, staff, students and parents at the town’s three post primary schools, St. Jarlath’s College, Presentation College and Scoil Bhríde, have been taking part in the consultation which began in November 2020.
The Department of Education will review the proposal for the amalgamation, which will likely involve a feasibility study of both sites.
Under the plan, St. Jarlath’s College will also seek to change its status to that of a co-educational school.
The plan has been confirmed in a joint statement from CEIST - the patron of Scoil Bhríde and Presentation College, and Archbishop Francis Duffy - patron of St Jarlath’s College.
Gerry McGuill is Chief Executive of CEIST - he told Keith Finnegan on Galway Talks over 30 consultation meetings took place, facilitated by an independent party.
