Galway Bay fm newsroom - Parents are raising serious concerns after it was revealed that Coláiste an Chreagáin in Mountbellew is to stop taking in new students from September.
School management says first year students and transition years will not be taken in this year as the school moves towards becoming a further education and training hub.
The board of management met this week to discuss the challenges posed by declining enrolements.
From September this year, the school will accommodate less than 50 students in total.
Coláiste an Chreagáin says it'll continue to support current students to complete their studies up to their next State exam, and a parents' meeting will be called shortly.
Speaking to Keith Finnegan, Principal Ann Marie Carroll said there's been a continuous decline in enrolments - as the area is well served by other mainstream schools.
She says the decline has put pressure on staffing resources and funding - and further education is the most viable option for the future.
However, parent Clare Cheethams says parents received a text on Tuesday informing them of the wind-down.
She says parents are ready to fight for the school to remain open.
