Galway Bay fm newsroom - Overcrowding at University Hospital Galway last month was the worst January on record - and the third worst in the entire country.
Figures from the INMO show there were 681 people on trolleys last month, compared to 618 during the same period in 2017.
It's the worst figure for January over the past 12 years and contrasts with just 155 people on trolleys at UHG in January of 2006.
The figures for last month were the third highest nationwide, behind University Hospital Limerick and Cork University Hospital.
Meanwhile, there were 191 people on trolleys at Portiuncula last month - a significant decrease on the figure of 379 recorded at the Ballinasloe hospital in January 2017.
INMO General Secretary Phil Ni Sheaghdha says extra capacity has to be backed up with extra staff and extra pay.
