Galway Bay fm newsroom - There are over 11,000 drivers with learner permits in Galway.
A new campaign is being launched by the Road Safety Authority and Gardaí, to encourage learner drivers to get off their permits and get a licence.
Figures provided by the RSA show there are over 7,000 drivers on their first learner permit in Galway and almost 2,400 on their second.
There are over 1100 on their fifth permit or more.
Nationally, there are over 41,000 people on their fourth or subsequent learner permit for a car or B class licence.
The appeal comes as Gardaí are today mounting checkpoints focusing on learner permit holders and ensuring compliance with learner driver regulations.
