Galway Bay fm newsroom - The Order of Malta has secured permission to retain its operational base at Liosban Industrial Estate.
This involves the retention of the first floor level, the change of use from light industrial to a social centre, and the revised front elevation including new windows, doors and signage at Kilkerrin Business Park.
The volunteer ambulance and first aid organisation has been operating in Galway for 60 years.
City planners have attached four conditions to the granting of permission.
Fianna Fail City Councillor John Connolly says the Order of Malta facility on Helen Street has outlived its practical use - adding that its size and physical structure are no longer fit for purpose.
He says the more accessible and modern new building will allow the organisation to continue to provide its services in a more purpose-built facility.
