Galway Bay fm newsroom - More than a million euro worth of fines were handed out at courthouses in Galway in 2018.
The highest value of fines was at Galway courthouse, where judges imposed fines totalling three quarters of a million euro.
A large amount of fines were also handed out in Gort, Cill Ronain, Clifden, Ballinasloe, Derrynea, Loughrea and Tuam courthouses last year.
A total of 1.4 million euro worth of fines were imposed in Galway courts but only about a third of this money has been recovered, according to details released under the Freedom of Information Act.
Nationally there was a recovery rate of less than 49 percent in 2017, with 14 million euro in fines still outstanding from the two years.
