Galway Bay fm newsroom - A formal appeal against planning permission for the conversion of the Old Grove Hospital in Tuam has been lodged.
Earlier this year, the county council granted planning permission to the Health Service Executive to develop a new mental health campus at the site of the old hospital at Vicar Street.
However, that decision has been appealed to An Bord Pleanála.
The project at the Old Grove Hospital in Tuam involves the part-demolition, refurbishment and remodelling of the building in two phases.
Phase One will incorporate mental health and shared services.
Phase Two will accommodate Early Intervention and Disability Services.
In an appeal against the grant of planning permission, relatives and friends of Tuam Grove Garden Babies have made submissions.
They feel that the planning conditions imposed by the council don't address concerns relating to the possible unoffical burial of babies in unmarked graves at the back of the hospital.
The objectors feel that because the children's burial ground at the back of the hospital is outside the remit of the planning application, it could get damaged and won't be protected.
They want the planning authority to give the burial ground 'protected status' so that it is appropriately maintained.
