O Cuiv calls for extension of government employment scheme

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Galway West TD Éamon Ó Cuív is calling for an extension to a government scheme which provides opportunities to the long-term unemployed.

The Fianna Fail TD is calling on the Government to lift the one year limit currently on the Tús scheme.

Participants who finish the scheme must find alternative employment or sign-on again and cannot re-apply for three years.

The programme supports the staffing of community facilities and services including bus services and 'Meals on Wheels'.

Currently 406 people are on the Tús scheme in the west of Ireland, while over 3,000 people are receving long-term unemployment benefit in the region.
