Galway Bay fm newsroom - The number of COVID-19 patients at UHG has almost doubled over the past week and is now the second highest nationwide.
Latest figures from the HSE show UHG now has 63 patients with the virus, compared to 36 this day last week.
The highest figure in the country is recorded at Letterkenny University Hospital, where there are 72 COVID patients.
Meanwhile, there's been a considerable reduction in virus patients at Portiuncula Hospital Ballinasloe over the past week.
Latest figures show there are nine patients with the virus, compared to 15 patients this time last week.
It comes as the Irish Medical Organisation says the health service is under huge pressure due to the number off staff off sick with Covid.
Spokesperson, Anne Dee, says the staff shortages urgently need to be addressed.
