It's as The Health Research Board has announced six projects nationwide that will be supported following a rigorous application process involving an international panel of experts.
At NUI Galway, the Primary Care Clinical Trials Network will be assisted in producing high quality clinical evidence to improve patient outcome in primary care, where the bulk of healthcare is provided.
The priority will be on trials in chronic disease management and on patients suffering from multiple health conditions, as well as infectious diseases.
Over the past five years, it's recruited almost four thousand patients for clinical trials - and now hopes to recruit hundreds more in expanded trials.
Meanwhile, the Diabetes Collaborative Clinical Trial Network will be supported in advancing trials in new medicines and technologies to improve health and reduce disease burden for diabetes patients.
They say diabetes is one of the most common chronic diseases in Ireland and it's increasing at an alarming rate alongside obesity rates.
Areas of focus will include diabetes in pregnancy, technologies, foot disease, advanced therapies and behavioral change.
