Galway Bay fm newsroom - A research team at NUI Galway has made a major breakthrough in the study of treatment options for triple negative breast cancer.
Unlike other forms of the disease, there are no targeted therapies for TNPC which is a very aggressive and difficult to treat condition.
Chemotherapy is the primary treatment option, and although initially successful, a large percentage of patients relapse within one to three years.
Researchers at NUI Galway have now discovered a new therapy that can significantly increase the effectiveness of the treatment.
They identified a cellular stress sensor which helps cancer cells to survive and grow in response to chemotherapy - and also how it can be blocked from doing so.
Dr. Susan Logue says the next step will be clinical trials, hear more from her on the 11 bulletin...
