Galway Bay fm newsroom - One in 12 young women have had non-consensual sexual contact according to a new study by NUI Galway.
It found that one in 12 young women are certain they've had sexual contact in the past year where they couldn't give consent or stop what was happening because they were drugged, drunk, incapacitated, or asleep.
In addition three percent of men who responded to the survey are certain they've had sexual contact where they couldn't consent because they were asleep or incapacitated.
Doctoral researcher at NUIG and author of the report Elaine Byrnes says the results highlight the need for more education surrounding sexual consent
According to the Irish Times the survey of 1,700 people aged 18-29 is the first comprehensive study of sexual behaviour and assault in a college population in Ireland.
