Galway Bay fm newsroom - An NUI Galway scientist has secured 100 thousand euro in funding to advance breast cancer research.
The allocation has been approved by research charity Breast Cancer Now.
NUIG's Lambe Institute for Transitional Research will lead the project to identify the genetic factors which drive breast cancer progression.
Dr. Sharon Glynn will lead the three year study to examine how the HERV-K gene which is present in cells as a result of viral DNA.
She says it hopes to uncover whether the four HERV-K proteins could be used as markers to determine whether a patient's breast cancer is likely to spread.
