Galway Bay fm newsroom - A study by researchers in NUI Galway has revealed social media overload can affect student's academic performance.
Social media overload occurs when people become overwhelmed and exhausted by excessive social media consumption.
The research shows social media overload can be triggered by FOMO or fear of missing out on social interactions.
The data suggests that being constantly overloaded by social media can reduce people's self-control and lead to poor academic performance in third level students.
The year-long investigation was carried out by members of NUIG's Cairnes Institute, and academics from the US and Finland.
Author of the study Dr Eoin Whelan says people need to manage their technology usage - to hear more, tune in to Galway Bay fm news on the hour...
