Galway Bay fm newsroom - Researchers at NUI Galway are carrying out a large-scale project that aims to protect private well-owners from infection from deadly bacteria.
The team, based at the Antimicrobial Resistance and Microbial Ecology Group, have been awarded funding by the EPA.
Their project focuses on pathogenic E.Coli VTEC, a bacteria carried naturally and harmlessly in the gut of cattle and sheep.
However, it can cause severe gastrointestinal infection in humans.
Researchers are aiming to develop new, rapid, on-site detection methods, as well as risk models and management software to predict contamination.
Principal Investigator Dr. Liam Burke says Ireland represents the 'perfect storm' for groundwater contamination by VTEC.
