Galway Bay fm newsroom - NUI Galway has played a key role in the development of consent workshops which are set to be rolled out in several secondary schools next year.
The Smart Consent Workshops are being introduced after their success at third-level.
The demand is being attributed to a number high profile rape cases.
Dr. Siobhan O'Higgins from NUIG's School of Psychology is part of the team who developed the workshops.
She says instinct alone isn't enough to deal with the issue of consent.
The Association of Secondary Teachers Ireland says consent classes must be taught in small groups.
It comes as Smart Consent Workshops are to be rolled out to several schools next year.
The ASTI believes the maximum number of students taking part at any one time should be 16.
Its President Deirdre McDonall says for the classes to be effective, they need to be designed with consideration.
The message being highlighted by the National Parents Council Post Primary is that young people need to get factual information when it comes to consent.
Paul Rolston from the NPCpp, says some families find it uncomfortable discussing certain issues, and this needs to be taken into account.
