Galway Bay fm newsroom - NUI Galway is leading a research project that aims to identity treatments for currently incurable neurological diseases.
The project is led by a team at the Centre for Chromosome Biology and the Galway Neuroscience Centre, in association with universities in Scotland and Wales.
Their focus will be on disorders, including Huntington's Disease and Myotonic Dystrophy, caused by defective genes.
They'll work to identity how these genes repeat and grow, and how new drugs can slow the rate of progress.
Research lead, Dr. Bob Lahue, says the hope is that a single drug can be found to tackle a range of neurological diseases.
