NUIG-developed mortgage legislation to help people remain in their homes

Galway Bay fm newsroom - NUI Galway developed mortgage legislation is to help people remain in their homes.

The Land and Conveyancing Law Reform (Amendment) Act 2019, which is now in force, allows courts to better assist those in mortgage distress

The new legislation allows courts to take into account the circumstances of everyone living in the home, and any proposals made by the borrower to the lender.

The new law will also allow the court to review the conduct of the mortgage lender as well as the borrower to help find a solution when there's a risk of losing their home.

It was inspired and drafted originally in the NUIG School of Law, following detailed research on EU developments.
