Galway Bay fm newsroom - Scientists at NUI Galway have made a breakthrough in the study of treatments of an aggressive form of breast cancer.
Researchers discovered how cells related to triple negative breast cancer can rewire themselves to survive and spread to other body parts.
Unlike other forms of breast cancer, there are no targetted therapies available for triple negative breast cancer.
However, the new research shows that this cell behaviour can be reversed through the use of specialised drugs that inhibit a specific cell behaviour known as the IRE1stress response pathway.
Professor for Cancer Biology at NUI Galway, Afshin Samali, explains how the cells related to this form of breast cancer rewire themselves.
