NUI Galway research to contribute to change in transport fuel in Europe

Galway Bay fm newsroom - NUI Galway and Gas Networks Ireland are leading a major project to introduce compressed natural gas and renewable gas for trucks, vans and buses.

For the first time, the college has secured funding from the EU's Connecting Europe Facility.

The 'Causeway' project has received 6.5 million euro co-funding from the European Commission.

The project will see the development of a natural gas transport re-fuelling network across the country.

A renewable gas injection facility will also be built this year and the work will be monitored by NUI Galway.

The research will then be fed back to gas operators all over Europe to help develop similar projects across the continent.

Pádraic Ó hUiginn from the Ryan Institute at NUIG says it's the first project of its kind in Ireland - and they'll be looking at similar research carried out in Europe.
