Galway Bay fm newsroom - 800 people have signed an online petition calling on Galway West TD Noel Grealish to apologise for comments about African migrants he allegedly made at a public meeting in Oughterard last night.
The Galway Anti-Racism Network has gone a step further, and is calling on the Independent Deputy to resign.
At the public meeting in Oughterard Community Centre, which was attended by 800 people, concerns about the future of the former Connemara Gateway hotel in the area were discussed.
The meeting was held as a tender process has been ongoing to find locations for new asylum seeker centres in Galway, Mayo and Roscommon.
Social Democrats city councillor Owen Hanley has created the petition in which he calls on Deputy Grealish to apologise for his comments.
Chairperson of Galway Anti-Racism Network Joe Loughane who attended the Oughterard meeting, says he heard the comments, and is this afternoon calling on Deputy Grealish to resign.
Galway West TD Catherine Connolly also attended the meeting and says she was disappointed with some comments made by some elected representatives.
Galway Bay fm news has made several attempts to contact Deputy Grealish today and he has not responded.
The creator of the petition, Cllr Hanley has been unavailable for comment.
