Galway Bay fm newsroom - It will be as far out as 2022 before Galway gets a new county library, and it is no longer likely that it will be located in the proposed Black Box cultural hub
City chief executive Brendan McGrath says the site is too small to house a cultural space, parking and a library so an alternative site is being sourced.
Mr McGrath says the Department of the Environment did not include a new library for Galway as a priority in its recent lists
However it has said it will re-assess this position when a proposal is presented and Mr McGrath says the aim is to have one ready early in the New Year
The county council is the lead authority in developing this project, assisted by the city council
The city chief has acknowledged the current position of renting the premises in Hynes Building is not ideal, so the councils are keen to progress the project
