Galway Bay fm newsroom - Lough Derg, which borders counties Galway, Clare and Tipperary, is set to receive a new Coast Guard site.
The Office of Public Works has confirmed it's currently at the early stages of a possible site purchase at Killaloe in county Tipperary for the Irish Coast Guard Service.
It follows a request by the Coast Guard for the OPW to seek a new site for its operations based in Killaloe, because the existing location has been deemed not suitable for its long-term requirements.
It's understood the OPW is currently assessing two potential sites for the development.
It comes as earlier this month the RNLI assisted in the rescue of five people in Portumna who had been on board a cruiser which had caught fire at Castle Harbour.
Minister of State and Galway East TD Anne Rabbitte says it’s great to finally see some movement on the new site for the Coast Guard which plays a key role in keeping those on Lough Derg safe.
