A new branch of the "Men's Shed" movement has been established in Connemara, to honour the ground breaking work carried out in the region by the Italian engineer, Marconi.
He's known for his work in developing radio - and sending the first first message across the Atlantic.
This new branch of the Men's Shed movement has been set in up in Clifden and it has attracted widespread interest locally among men who want an outlet for their time and talents.
The participants have named the new shed unit, as the "Marconi Men's Shed", harking back to the work of the Italian communications genius, Marconi.
Marconi established a station close to Clifden and it was from there that he sent the first wireless trans-Atlantic message from Europe to North America in 1907.
He had scores of men employed at his ground breaking Station in Connemara.
In a new world, there is more talk of isolation despite the huge advances in communications.
Nowadays there are calls for more human connections and interactions.
In a quirk of history the new Men's Shed in Clifden responds to that call but also invokes the name of the man who did so much to lay the foundations for developments such as social media and international connections.
