Galway Bay fm newsroom - A new officer has been assigned to work with communities across the county to make the most of Galway's water resources.
The Local Authorities Waters and Communities Office has been established to promote public awareness, participation and knowledge in relation to drinking water, wastewater and natural waters such as rivers and lakes.
The new office will work with communities across the county under the Water Framework Directive.
The directive aims to improve the quality of water in all natural bodies including rivers, lakes, estuaries, groundwater and coastal waters.
Under a variety of community initiatives, groups will be able to apply for LEADER funding and funding from the new LAWCO office to develop projects to protect and make the most of their local water resources.
This will include projects from angling and habitat protection, to the use of natural water bodies for amenity and well-being.
Galway's communities will be served by Catherine Steele, the community water officer for Galway and South Roscommon, who is based in Liosban Industrial Estate in the city.
A series of public consultations on the Water Framework Directive will take place across the county shortly, details of which will be announced in the coming weeks.
