Galway Bay fm newsroom - Mountbellew locals are developing an action plan in a bid to safeguard the future of Coláiste an Chreagáin.
Hundreds of people gathered at a public meeting in Mountbellew last night to discuss the issue.
The meeting was scheduled to take place in the school, but when locals turned up, the school gates were locked and the meeting had to be moved to the pastoral centre.
It was announced at the end of March that first year students and transition years will not be taken in this year as the school moves towards becoming a further education and training hub.
Coláiste an Chreagáin says it’ll continue to support current students to complete their studies up to their next State exam.
Parents and locals have vowed to fight the decision, and were supported last night by TDs from across Galway East and Roscommon Galway.
The GRETB was represented by its chairperson, Loughrea area councillor Michael Moegie Maher, however, the executive of the board was not represented.
Last night's meeting was chaired by former TD Paul Connaughton senior.
He says a number of actions will now be taken, and a further meeting will take place on the 8th of May.
