Minister says complex issues need resolving before future of Tuam Mother and Baby Home can be decided

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Complex legal and operational issues require further consideration before a proposal can be brought to government on the future of the site of the former Tuam Mother and Baby Home.

That's according to Children's Minister Katherine Zappone, who's reacting to a report published last evening on a public consultation on the future of the site.

The report on the public consultation - which ended in March - reveals a polarised opinion on the future of the site at Athenry Road.

The consultation was carried out by the County Council on behalf of Children's Minister Katherine Zappone.

Former residents of the home - as well as their families - have expressed a preference for a full forensic excavation of the site along with DNA analysis.

However, local residents are largely advocating that the remains should not be disturbed and it should become a site of memorial instead.

Minister Zappone says a number of complex legal and operational issues require further consideration before a proposal can be brought to government on the future of the site.
