Galway Bay fm newsroom - Tech giant Microsoft is investing in a programme to plant trees in Galway and other counties.
The company is investing in Ireland's target for afforestation which aims to reduce the country's greenhouse gas emissions.
According to today's Irish Times, the investment by Microsoft is the biggest corporate commitment to creating new native forests in Ireland in a decade.
The project itself will involve planting trees on 137 hectares of land starting with Galway, Cork and Kerry.
They will be planted before summer while the remainder of sites across the country will be planted next year.
The news on Microsoft's investment comes the damage caused by a forest wildfire near Oughterard over the past few days is estimated at 3 and a half thousand hectares of lost forestry.
