Man killed in Gort crash named locally as well known GAA sportsman PJ Mahoney

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The man who died in a road crash near Gort has been named locally as PJ Mahoney.

PJ, who was aged in his late 70's and living in the area, was well known in GAA circles as a former champion hurler.

He was goalkeeper on the Ardrahan team that won senior county championships in 1974, 1975 and 1978.

PJ was killed following a two vehicle collision at Kiltartan shortly after 3.30 yesterday afternoon.

The road was closed overnight to accommodate a technical examination.

The driver of the other vehicle, a man in his 30's, was taken to UHG with non life threatening injuries.

Witnesses, or anyone with information or dash-cam footage, are asked to contact Loughrea Garda Station on 091-842 870, the Garda Confidential Line on 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.

Speaking to Galway Talks, Councillor Gerry Finnerty paid tribute to PJ.
