A man has been jailed for six years at the Central Criminal Court for raping a young woman in Galway three years ago.
The man, who's 25 years old, cannot be named to protect the identity of the victim.
The court heard the then 20 year old woman was at a party in July 2021 with some friends, later taking a taxi home.
When she got home, she was face-timing the man and she invited him over to smoke cannabis.
She later woke up to the man penetrating her and she tried to kick him out, but he refused and took her phone so she couldn't call for help.
He told the woman she had imagined the rape because she'd been taking drugs.
When she finally managed to get him out the door, he fell down and feigned a heart attack.
The man later sent her a text saying "I wasn’t myself" and told her to get the morning after pill.
Ms Justice Melanie Greally said that this was taken as an admission of guilt.
She said the aggravating factors were the breach of trust involved, that it had happened in her home, that he refused to leave, and he prevented her seeking assistance by taking her mobile phone.
Ms. Justice Greally set a headline sentence of seven-and-a-half years but reduced it to six years after considering mitigating factors.
The man, who has five previous convictions, had pleaded not guilty but was convicted by unanimous decision.
