Majority of children attending Galway sexual assault unit aged from 3 to 12

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The majority of children who attended the specialist child and adolescent support and treatment service in Galway last year were aged between three and 12.

The CASATS unit, based in Ballybrit, is the only 24 hour service in Ireland where young victims of sexual abuse or alleged rape can be forensically examined.

In 2016, therapy services in Galway, Cork, and Tralee all had long waiting lists when they closed.

While the Galway unit closed in February, agreement was reached and the HSE re-opened the unit in April last year.

Children's support service CARI says there are still excessive delays in bringing abuse cases involving children to trial.

Launching its annual report - it says there's still an average 5 year wait from the date of a crime to the end of criminal proceedings.
