Major changes approved for Glenlo Abbey Hotel despite objections

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Changes to the Glenlo Abbey Hotel on the outskirts of the city can go ahead.

It follows a decision by An Bord Pleanála to allow the development in Bushypark despite objections.

The county council originally granted planning permission for changes at Glenlo Abbey Hotel last summer.

The development involves a single storey extension to the existing golf clubhouse and a new three-storey extension to the hotel to provide 17 additional bedrooms and external terraces.

It will also involve a single storey spa facility within the existing walled garden and a canopy and weather protecting entrance to the Oak Cellar bar.

Local residents appealed the decision by the county council claiming their property is trespassed upon by some users of the golf driving range.

In allowing the work to go ahead at Glenlo Abbey Hotel, An Bord Pleanála states that it would not seriously injure the amenities of the area or nearby property.

The board has attached 10 planning conditions to the works.

One condition requires the developer to facilitate the preservation, recording and protection of archaeological materials within the site.
