Galway Bay fm newsroom - NUI Galway has announced the appointment of Dr. Máire Geoghegan-Quinn as chairperson of its governing authority, Údarás na hOllscoile.
Carna-native Dr. Geoghegan Quinn is a former Galway West TD, who served in a number of ministerial roles including Minister for the Gaeltacht and Minister for Justice.
She also served as European Commissioner for Research, Innovation and Science and was a member of the European Court of Auditors.
Dr Geoghegan-Quinn was unanimously elected to the chair of NUI Galway's governing authority at the first formal meeting of the new Údarás.
NUI Galway says her wealth of experience and knowledge nationally and internationally will be a huge asset as it looks to implement it's strategic plan "Shared Vision, Shaped by Values".
It aims to guide the strategic development of the university, ensure strong governance, and deepen existing connections while forming new relationships.
Dr Geoghegan-Quinn told Keith Finnegan on Galway Talks she's taking up the position at a pivotal time for NUI Galway.
