M6 lay-bys closed due to driver confusion

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Two lay-bys near the Loughrea exit on the M6 have been closed off due to motorists mistaking the pull-in areas for a motorway exit.

The lay-bys, which were commonly used by motorists including truck drivers, are Garda Enforcement Areas and are signposted to indicate that they are accessible only to Authorised Vehicles.

However, TII says the facilities have been the subject of intermittent damage to the control gates over the years.

The transport body says the proximity of the lay-bys to Exit 16 Loughrea are a source of potential driver confusion due to directional signage for the nearby junction.

As a result, TII requested the operator, N6 (Concession) Limited, to take appropriate steps necessary to ensure the integrity of these facilities and to mitigate against any perceived road safety issues.

TII says a full range of car, bus and heavy goods vehicles parking facilities are now available at the nearby Galway Plaza.
