Loughrea now has highest incidence rate of Covid-19 in Galway

Galway Bay fm newsroom - Loughrea now has the highest incidence rate of Covid-19 in Galway.

The figure for the electoral area is almost 5 times higher than it was this day last week and is well above the national average.

Galway currently has a 14 day incidence rate of 45 - well below the national average of 87.

However, while some areas of the county have negligible case numbers, others are closer to or even beyond the national average.

The highest is currently in Loughrea, which has a figure of 99 cases per 100 thousand people.

That's a fivefold increase since this day last week.

Elsewhere, and the figure continues to improve in many areas - Connemara North and South now have less than 5 cases per 100 thousand population.

Galway City East, West and Central have all seen significant improvements over the past week.

Galway City West in particular - once the worst-hit urban area in the country, it's now just below the national average at 86.

The incidence rate for Oranmore-Athenry has doubled compared to this day last week, but is still well below the average at 54.

Ballinasloe went from having less than 5 cases per 100 thousand people to 39 during the same period.

Meanwhile, Tuam experienced a slight rise in its 14 day incidence rate, to 36 - and the figure for Gort/Kinvara remained generally static at 55.
