Loughrea couple receives apology after deaths of baby daughters at Portiuncula hospital

Galway Bay fm newsroom - A Loughrea couple has received an unreserved apology from the HSE after losing two baby girls at the Portiuncula Hospital maternity unit in 2008 and 2010.

Warren and Lorraine Reilly's daughter Asha was stillborn, while their second daughter Amber died at just a week old after being rushed to Holles Street Hospital in Dublin.

The apology to the Reillys comes ahead of the publication of an external review into standard of care at Portiuncula's maternity unit.
Parents Warren and Lorraine Reilly have received reviews into the deaths of their infant daughters.

In the case of Asha, who was stillborn in 2008, there was a failure to recognise the signs of placental abruption, which would have required intervention at an earlier stage.

In the case of their second daughter Amber, who died in 2010, the review found there was a failure to identify and respond to abnormal cardiotocography tracings.

The Reillys also uncovered internal emails from the hospital which they claim show that some staff attempted to 'cover their tracks' in relation to the report on their daughter Amber.

The Reillys are among 18 families included in the Portiuncula review, which is to be published in full in the coming weeks.

The review, carried out in 2011, makes a series of recommendations including the need for more accurate record keeping.

The couple say they were never informed that the hospital was carrying out a review into infant care at the facility.

Warren Reilly says they should have been told about the review.
