Galway Bay fm newsroom - Work is finally getting underway on a long-awaited upgrade of the N63 between Abbeyknockmoy and Annagh Hill.
The 6.3 million euro scheme is expected to take about 15 months to complete.
The contract for the works was officially signed last month.
The N63, a national secondary route, links Moylough in east Galway with the city via the N17.
The improvement scheme extends eastwards from the townland of Annagh Hill to the area immediately west of Abbeyknockmoy village.
The works will involve upgrading 3.2 kilometers of the existing single carriageway near Abbeyknockmoy.
It’ll link the M17/M18 motorway junction at Annagh Hill with a section of the N63 which has been recently upgraded.
The works include fencing, site clearance, traffic management, signage, landscaping and footway/cycleway construction.
It'll also see the provision of safety barriers and drainage systems.
In a statement to FYI Galway, the County Council says the contractor is now on site and is establishing site offices.
Fencing and site clearance is to begin this week.
