Athenry Boys School at Knockaunglas claims the decision by the county council to grant planning permission for the dog park is a 'reckless' decision.

Last month the county council granted planning permission for a secure dog park in Athenry.

It would have exercise and socialisation areas for different dog sizes.

Athenry Boys School has lodged an appeal against the decision to An Bord Pleanála.

The school argues that the planned site does not have safe access for pedestrians and there are no measures planned to make the road or junction safer.

The school also argues that increasing traffic so close to a school without addressing the dangerous nature of the road and lack of footpath is premature.

A decision is due from An Bord Pleanála in November.
