Local Postmaster makes call for Government support in bid to sustain local post office network

Galway Bay fm newsroom - The Irish Postmasters' Union representative for the West says local post offices are struggling and need government supports to survive.

It comes as reports have emerged today that the Government is considering a plan to pay postmasters a State subvention in an attempt to keep post offices open.

The Irish Independent understands that a State subvention of between €10,000 and €12,000 per year is being considered under a comprehensive national plan.

The proposal is set to be discussed at cabinet.

900 post offices are independently operated nationwide, with contracts from An Post.

IPU Western Spokesperson Seona O’Fegan operates post offices at Barna and Fr. Griffin Road.

She told Keith Finnegan on Galway Talks consumer habits have changed and many areas of the traditional business have been lost over the years.
