That's according to figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation - which reveal that 655 patients were waiting on trolleys at UHG last month.

That's the worst August on record since the INMO began compiling figures in 2006.

Meanwhile, Portiuncula Hospital saw a decrease year-on-year - from 162 people on waiting trolleys in August 2018 compared to 129 last month.

However, it's still a significantly high figure for the Ballinasloe Hospital - which had just 2 people awaiting trolleys in August 2006.

Nationally August reached a record high with almost 10 thousand patients forced to wait on trolleys around the country.
