Galway Bay fm newsroom - A long-awaited road widening project at Kilbannon near Tuam is now unlikely to get underway until next year.

The matter was raised at this week's meeting of the Tuam Municipal District, where Councillors Colm Keavney and Donagh Killilea expressed concerns over the project.

The works will see a 1.2 kilometre section from Duddy's Pub to Kilconly GAA Club significantly widened, as well as the installation of a walkway and cycleway.

The project has suffered significant delays as a result of Covid-19 - and it was revealed this week by council engineers that it's unlikely to start "this side of Christmas".

Discussions over land are ongoing and are expected to take another few weeks, after which point a contractor will be sought - which means all going to plan, works would likely get underway in Spring.

Council staff gave an assurance that there is a good relationship between landowners and the local authority, and they're confident the land needed will be acquired by agreement.
