Irish version of Siri to be developed in Connemara

Galway Bay fm newsroom – An American academic who plans to develop an Irish version of Siri is coming to Connemara.

Siri is an artificial intelligence assistant on Apple devices such as the iPhone.

According to the Irish Times, Professor Kevin Scannell from Saint Louis University in Missouri will spend six months in Carna as he develops a new Siri or Alexa style virtual assistant that speaks Irish.

Professor Scannel, who will work alongside researchers at NUI Galway, has previously developed an Irish spell checker, grammar checker, and thesaurus.

He’s also worked on tailoring popular apps such as Gmail, Twitter and WhatsApp, to the Irish-speaking market.

Professor Scannell will carry out his project in Carna during the first six months of 2020.
