Galway Bay fm newsroom - A major insurance company is investigating 36 allegedly staged accidents across the county as part of a national fraud probe.
Axa Insurance is examining 'organised rings' of staged crashes - and the company has focused on Galway for its high number of suspect incidents.
Insurance firm Axa is investigating 36 allegedly staged accidents in Galway, which boasts the highest number of suspect cases nationwide behind Donegal.
It believes the high number of suspected fraud cases are the result of organised rings operating in certain areas, particularly in those two counties.
The company says it has discovered links between persons involved in over 35 suspected staged accidents across Galway.
These incidents under investigation have given rise to almost 200 third party personal injury claims - with the total cost in excess of two million euro.
According to the Irish Examiner, the firm has referred up to 25 cases to the gardaí for investigation in circumstances where fraud is suspected in the past two-and-a-half years.
