Galway Bay fm newsroom - An inquest has returned a verdict of accidental death in relation to a motorway crash near Ballinasloe which claimed the lives of a family of three.
Karzan Sabah Ahmed, his wife Shahen Qasim Faris and their eight-month old daughter Lina all died in the crash last year.
The fatal crash happened on August 19th last year, between Junctions 15 and 14 on the M6 at Poolboy, Ballinasloe.
35-year-old Karzan, his 29-year-old wife Shahen, and their 8-month-old baby daughter Lina all died in the crash.
Originally from the Kurdistan region of northern Iraq, they had been living in Galway City, as Karzan completed his PhD at University of Galway.
Jonasz Lach was the driver of the other vehicle involved in the crash, and was found to have traces of anti-psychotic medication and cannabis in his bloodstream.
At an inquest, held in Gort, Coroner Dr Richard Joyce returned an open verdict in relation to his death - as he wasn't sure if Mr Lach intended to end his life.
According to the Irish Independent, the inquest heard from other motorists who witnessed Mr Lach driving erratically and on the wrong side of the road.
The partner of Mr Lach wept throughout her evidence, as she said she never at any point believed the father of her two children would harm himself or others.
However, the inquest heard evidence of three significant psychotic episodes suffered by Mr Lach, one in 2018, another in 2019 and a third in July 2020.
