Galway Bay fm newsroom - Hundreds of people have attended the official unveiling of the Padraic O Conaire statue in Eyre Square by President Michael D. Higgins.
The original statue was moved to Galway City Museum over ten years ago while Eyre Square was undergoing a multi-million euro revamp.
This afternoon marks the official return of one of the most iconic public landmarks in the city after more than a decade of absence.
The bronze replica of the original stone statue now sits near the centre of the square, facing south towards Galway Bay.
It's seated on a base of Connemara stone donated from the O Conaire family home in Rosmuc.
Those in attendance at today's ceremony included relatives of Padraic O Conaire and sculptor of the original statue, Albert Power.
