Galway Bay fm newsroom - Toghermore House in Tuam will remain in partial operation for at least another two years.
That’s according to Chief Officer Tony Canavan who discussed the winding down of the facility at this week’s meeting of the Regional Health Forum.
Tuam area councillor and Forum member Donagh Killilea said the planned closure was disturbing news for the area after two million euro was spent on it in 2013.
He questioned the future use of the building and warned that it should not be left idle, as was the case with the Grove Hospital for a 10 year period.
Tony Canavan said the 11 residents will move to houses in the community by summer, with one moving to longer term private nursing home care.
He told members the day centre services will eventually move to the refurbished Grove Hospital which has recently received planning permission, however this transition will not take place for a couple of years.
The training centre which is currently providing services to up to 50 people is to be reassessed to determine if the model originally devised in the nineties meets current needs.
Mr. Canavan says every effort will be made to ensure the building is put to good use as an investment for the HSE.
